AFL 2022: All the teams, tips and selection news for round 17

Jordan De Goey is set for a stint on the sidelines as the meteoric rise of Collingwood’s mid-season draftee has been rewarded. Plus, all the teams and tips.

Free agent Jordan De Goey’s lack of durability was exposed again on Friday by a likely three-week quad strain that will allow the Pies to unearth a self-described “podgy” full forward.

De Goey’s injury has paved the way for the Pies to hand a debut to mid-season selection Josh Carmichael, a 191cm midfielder who was playing country football with Merbein this time last year.

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FULL TEAMS AND EXPERT TIPS

Pies recruiter Derek Hine told the Herald Sun former table tennis and basketball star Carmichael had played only a dozen or so elite football games but had impressed at every level.

De Goey felt quad tightness on the training track on Thursday and the Pies confirmed he would be out for 2-3 weeks with his latest injury.

Collingwood has postponed talks with De Goey on his contract while clubs including St Kilda do their due diligence on the rampaging mid-forward.

But they will have to factor into their research the reality De Goey has never been a player who strings together long streaks of football.

Discounting this year he has played 20 or more games in only two of seven seasons and has averaged only 16 games in those seasons given injuries and internal suspensions.

De Goey will miss games against North Melbourne and Adelaide and likely against Essendon given the Pies will be unlikely to risk him after only two games.

Back-up defender Jack Magden has broken his thumb and will miss six weeks, but the Pies will hope next week’s return of Darcy Moore will give them enough defensive cover.

Carmichael, 21, was playing in the Sunraysia league for Merbein, just north of Mildura, until finally moving to the SANFL last year for West Adelaide.

Hine said Carmichael’s elite running and penetrating kick were mixed with his capacity to improve at every level, with the Pies taking him at pick nine in the mid-season draft.

The old-fashioned bush full forward has now transformed himself into a bustling hard-running mid through sheer hard work.

“It’s a pretty rapid ascent. He only played half a dozen games at West Adelaide and he hadn’t really had an entree into an elite system before that,” Hine said.

“Saturday would probably be his 12th game at elite level if you take into account his SANFL games.

“He’s a cracking kid. He’s a 191cm mid and his ability to cover the ground is elite. His one-wood is his kicking and he’s still learning the caper.

“He has got a game made for the MCG. I went to Loxton to watch him play against Port Adelaide and his GPS stuff was off the charts against AFL-listed players. He was doing 15km plus for the game, so he is a real contest-to-contest player.

“Footy wasn’t his number one sport. He told me he was just a podgy kid that played full forward. He loved his basketball and table tennis.

“I said table tennis? He was the first player I have interviewed with a table tennis background.

“He sorted himself out a student exchange in the United States where he learnt elite habits and during Covid he drove his own recruiting for Nightcliff. He did his two weeks quarantine and played there. He is a real self starter.”

Carlton’s backline has received a major boost, with key defender Jacob Weitering confirmed to make his return against a resurgent West Coast on Sunday.

The Blues’ 2020 best and fairest winner, Weitering has been named at centre-halfback after missing the previous five games with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Carlton has also named fellow key defender Sam Durdin as part of an extended interchange bench after he had missed the previous two weeks with a knee injury.

The reinforcements down back will help curtail a West Coast attack which gets back key forward Josh Kennedy.

The No.1 pick in the AFL mid-season draft, Jai Culley, is a chance to make his debut after being named on the extended interchange bench.

Ruckman Tim English returns for the Bulldogs’ crunch clash with Sydney on Friday night, alongside Ed Richards and Mitch Hannan.

Richmond will get back key midfielder Dion Prestia for Saturday’s match against the Gold Coast Suns, after he missed last week’s win over West Coast with concussion protocols.

The return of Prestia will help soften the blow of the loss of Dustin Martin (hamstring) for the Tigers, who have also brought in defender Ben Miller and small forward Jake Aarts.

Jeremy Howe returns from illness for Collingwood’s match against North Melbourne on Saturday, while St Kilda has called upon Darragh Joyce to replace injured key defender Dougal Howard (knee).

Hawthorn has swung eight changes for its clash with Adelaide on Sunday, with Will Day (suspension), Jack Gunston (personal) and James Worpel (shoulder) among the outs.

Captain Ben McEvoy will play his first game since Round 2 for the Hawks, having overcome a serious neck injury.

Pies’ star sent for scans, in doubt to face Roos

—Rebecca Williams

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey has been sent for precautionary scans after experiencing quad tightness at training as the Magpies ruled out key defender Darcy Moore.

After returning to the Magpies’ line-up last round, De Goey felt some tightness early in the club’s training session on Thursday before he was sent for an examination as a safeguard.

The club was still awaiting the results of the scans.

It casts a cloud on De Goey’s availability for Saturday’s clash against North Melbourne at the MCG.

Magpies coach Craig McRae earlier confirmed Moore would not play against the Kangaroos at the MCG after he suffered bone bruising and a capsule strain to the knee last week.

After Moore avoided ligament damage, McRae said the star backman had pushed hard to play this weekend but got to about “80 per cent”.

“He won’t play this week, credit to him, he tried to get up but he didn’t quite get through the session,” McRae said.

“So we’ll just assess that and fingers crossed he is available for next week.

“He was reasonably close, about 80 per cent if you want to put a number on it, so we will just let him have the weekend off to get better and progress towards next week and hopefully he is available.”

De Goey returned to the Collingwood line-up for last week’s win over the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium after taking personal leave following his controversial mid-season trip to Bali.

The 26-year-old missed the Magpies’ Round 15 win over Greater Western Sydney after stepping away from the club to focus on his wellbeing after his Bail Jaunt, which resulted in him copping a suspended $25,0000 fine from the club.

Hawks skipper details long road back from neck injury

Hawthorn captain Ben McEvoy has revealed the nerve damage and loss of function in his arm he suffered after his long-awaited return from a neck injury was confirmed.

The Hawks will be bolstered by the return of their skipper and ruckman for Sunday’s clash against Adelaide after the ruckman was cleared to make his comeback from an injury, which threatened his season.

McEvoy has been sidelined for the past 14 weeks after he suffered a small fracture in his neck during training in March.

The 32-year-old did not require surgery on the injury but he was required to wear a neck brace for several weeks, including on the training track.

Hawthorn said the 245-game veteran had made a full recovery with “no ongoing complications” after consulting with several specialists during his rehabilitation.

McEvoy revealed the extent of the damage suffered from the injury but said he had always been confident he could return this season.

“It has been a long journey. I have been enormously privileged over my 15 year career that I have not had to do many long rehabs so this is the most games that I have ever missed,” McEvoy said.

“Once I felt that I had my health back, because it was obviously a pretty serious injury of the neck and everyone was like ‘Take your time’.

“But once I felt I was functioning normally again, the competitive instincts kicked back in and I have been really pushing for the last six or seven weeks or so and working really hard and huge thanks to our medical and conditioning team who have done a great job to try and get me ready to play footy again.

“I had some nerve damage from the incident and so it took a long time for that function to start to return so I was at as little as 20 per cent function in my right arm.

“It was worse than the first year getting in there and I could only lift the bar with no weights on it because the pathway just wasn’t firing. I couldn’t control that … that was just a matter of time.

“But once that started to improve and I was working very hard doing exercise every day. Once it was back in my control a little bit, I was always confident that I could get back.”

Hawks head of football Rob McCartney lauded McEvoy’s commitment to his recovery and said his return would be a major boost for the side.

“Ben’s dedication to get back on the field has been nothing short of inspirational,” McCartney said.

“Given the location of the injury in his neck, we did not want to take any risks with his recovery.

“Ben has worked incredibly hard in ticking every box required of him, while showing great trust and patience in our medical team.

“Along with injecting some much-needed experience into our ruck stocks, we are also thrilled to have our captain back on the field.”

The Hawks rotated the captaincy while McEvoy was sidelined with midfielder Jaeger O’Meara and defender James Sicily both having a turn in the role.

McEvoy has played just one game this season – in Round 2 – after missing the opening round due to health and safety protocols.

EXPERT TIPS

It all kicks off in Geelong with a top-of-the-table clash between the Cats and Demons which could go either way in this clash.

Sydney hosts the Western Bulldogs on Friday night, while Richmond’s contest against Gold Coast and the duel between St Kilda and Fremantle shape as 50/50 games on Saturday.

Find out who the experts are backing.
