Homeworld Helensvale: First look at new Harvey Norman showroom in planned expansion

Plans have been unveiled for a massive expansion of a Gold Coast shopping centre which will feature hundreds of carparks and a giant anchor tenant in its showroom.

Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Plans have been unveiled for a massive expansion of a northern Gold Coast shopping centre.

A 10,025sq m Harvey Norman showroom would be at the heart of an expanded Homeworld Helensvale complex, which sits on the corner of Hope Island Rd and Siganto Drive.

Plans lodged by Forest Endeavour revealed the new retail precinct would be built on vacant land on the southeastern side of the complex.

The single-storey building would represent the ninth stage of the complex and would be built on an elevated concrete platform to avoid flooding from nearby Saltwater Creek

It would have a 214sq m office mezzanine level on the eastern side of the building, as well as add a further 250 new carparks.

“The development’s built form seeks to generate visual interest via facade treatments with projecting elements to break up the mass of the building,” a planning report on the project reads.

“The building will be positioned on the southern side of the site with carparking proposed in front of the building providing direct and convenient access from the internal private roads

“The design aligns with the Harvey Norman branding and colours.”

The new retail complex has been designed by Brisbane-based architecture firm Cottee Parker.

No time frame has been put on construction of the project, which sits between the Pacific Motorway and the future Coomera Connector arterials.

Gold Coast City Council has previously ticked off on a series of expansions of the complex, including several yet-to-be-built stages which would have more shops and showrooms.

Documents reveal council planning staff met with the proponents in November 2023 and raised several concerns include a “lack of consistency between the proposed development and the provisions of the Helensvale Village Design Report and Development Code”.

“More specifically to the above, officers were concerned with the ability for future residents (of nearby proposed residential areas) to access (the complex).

“In response the plans show an indicative pedestrian access path from the elevated platform to the recreational precinct.

“The pedestrian access path is for information purposes only and will be designed and delivered under future stages where providing residential development.”
