MATTHEW NEWTON’S FILM ‘FROM NOWHERE’ RECEIVES RAVE REVIEWS
The son of Australian TV icons Bert and Patti was spotted behind the camera directing his latest film, Who We Are Now, in the Big Apple last week.
He told a source on the set he “hasn’t touched a drink in five years”.
The former Underbelly star, who has previously spent time in rehab after assault allegations against two well-known ex-girlfriends, is engaged to Catherine Schneiderman, whose father, Eric, is the Attorney-General of New York.
Newton, 40, was smartly dressed as he directed his small film crew on Broadway in the NoHo area of New York. Who We Are Now, written by Newton, has attracted a strong cast, including Emma Roberts, Zachary Quinto and Julianne Nicholson.
It tells the story of a woman sentenced to 10 years’ prison for manslaughter who seeks the help of a young public defender to protect her children.
His last film, From Nowhere, about three undocumented students desperately seeking to change their immigration status, won high praise.
Newton was all but forced to flee Australia in 2012. New York has allowed him to escape media and public attention and focus on film directing.
