Australia’s Sullivans Cove Distillery has been named the best single malt whisky at the prestigious World Whiskies Award.

It is the third time the boutique Tasmanian-based distillery has been judged a global winner, by the awards hosted by Whiskey Magazine.

The Cove’s 10-year-old cask French Oak expression, TD0217 took out the top spot in the Single Cask Single Malt category.

Sullivans Cove beat contenders from around the globe including Scotland, Japan, USA, Taiwan and other Australian distilleries.

Managing director Adam Sable said the company was thrilled to win for a third time.

“This is one of the younger whiskies that we’ve bottled at ten years old, and it just goes to show that the whiskies we’re bottling now are as good as anything we’ve ever released,” he said.

Roughly half of the winning cask was packaged in 200ml bottles and sold as part of a gift pack released to Sullivans Cove’s mailing list members last year, with only 147 full-sized bottles made available from the distillery’s cellar door.

“There’ll be some pretty happy people out there,” says Mr Sable.

“I love the idea that it went into the gift pack in the 200ml bottles, because it gives more people a chance to taste it.

“Huge congratulations have to go to our whole team, including our tasting panel, who check every cask at regular intervals to determine when and if they’re worthy of a Sullivans Cove label, and the optimal time for bottling.”

The Victorian-owned Sullivans Cove Distillery was established in 1994 in Tasmania.

In 2014, their 16-year-old cask of American Oak expression, won the World’s Best Single Malt.

The distillery won again in 2018 before receiving this year’s accolade.

A bottle of the Sullivans Cove American Oak Single Cask No. HH0351 set a record last year after it sold in London for $11,667.

The American Oak cask HH0351 was distilled in June 2000 and decanted in January 2017.

It was one of the last remaining bottles of just 136 made that year.

The record has since been beaten.
