HERE’s our pick of those Middle Eastern half moons of hardcore haloumi cheese that come fresh from the oven.

Al Alamy $3

Half shop, half cafe, Al Alamy is bustling from the word go each day. These are the some of the cheapest and best cheese pies, and you could easily eat two after a night out. Try the curried potato pie for something different.

Where: 51 Waterfield St, Coburg.

Oasis Bakery, $3.80

If Al Alamy is a Sunday morning cheese pie, then this is the everyday version. The pastry is less pillowy but somehow better for it, and is easier to divvy up between friends for a taste, without falling apart, if you have a caring and sharing disposition. Variation on the theme: try the stoneground wholemeal Lebanese sausage roll, with (you guessed it) haloumi.

Where: 9/993 North Rd, Murrumbeena.

Cedars Bakery cheese pies have a slightly higher ratio of cheese to pastry.

Cedars Bakery $3.50

Warning: A perfectly cooked cheese pie can become a hot cheesy gun, which will fire straight down your front at random. Cedars’ pies have a slightly higher cheese-to-pastry ratio than others, so eating on the run puts whatever you are wearing at risk. Totally worth it.

Where: 33-37 High St, Preston.
