VICTORIAN keeper Sam Harper has been taken to hospital after being struck in the head with a bat.

Harper, 20, was struck by South Australian batsman Jake Lehmann on the follow through of a shot and collapsed despite wearing a helmet.

He was keeping in the 49th over for left-arm spinner Jon Holland.

During an extended lunch break Harper was taken from the ground for scans at hospital.

Harper, starting his sixth first-class game covering for Test keeper Matt Wade, was talking and conscious as he left the Sheffield Shield match.

Lehmann had played a lone hand against the Bushrangers as the Redbacks lost 4/88 in the morning session to be 9/168 at lunch, trailing the visitors on the first innings by 16 runs in the top two clash.
