Young Liberal blue-blood Amelia Hamer to contest seat of Kooyong

The grand niece of former Premier Sir Rupert Hamer, Amelia, has been chosen by the Liberal Party to wrest the seat of Kooyong from Teal MP Monique Ryan.

The grand niece of former Premier Sir Rupert Hamer has been chosen by the Liberal Party to wrest the seat of Kooyong from Teal MP Monique Ryan.

Fintech executive Amelia Hamer easily defeated the Chair of Transgender Victoria Rochelle Pattison in the first round of voting of the 300 plus Liberals who had gathered at Hawthorn Town Hall on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement she said she was putting up her hand for the seat to fight to ensure future generations can access the same opportunities that past generations have had.

“I will fight to put home ownership back on the agenda for young Australians by tackling housing affordability and cost of living pressures,” she said.

A Liberal source said Hamer had received 233 votes to Pattison’s 59, with two other candidates garnering only 35 votes between them.

Senator James Paterson said the party is lucky to have capable and qualified candidates like Amelia Hamer putting their hand up to serve their local community.

“Amelia has a strong connection to her community here in Kooyong and her genuine passion for service is clear to anyone who speaks with her,” she said.

“She will be a champion for young Australians.”

Kooyong, which in the past was held by Liberal leaders Sir Robert Menzies and Andrew Peacock, was lost by former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg in 2022.

It is currently held by Dr Ryan on a margin of 2.94 per cent.
