Time Out wrote of Yarraville: “For a relatively small suburb, the cross-section of food, drink and things to do here is pretty remarkable, ranging from landmark, Art Deco cinema Sun Theatre to restaurants like the Indigenous-owned restaurant Mabu Mabu and tiny, contemporary Australian fine diner Navi. With an epicurean edge and a perfect balance of residential and recreational, right now there’s no place like Yarraville”.

It was one of two Australian suburbs to feature in the list of the world’s top 40 coolest neighbourhoods, with Sydney’s Marrickville coming in at 10th spot.

Number one on the list was Esquerra de l’Eixample, Barcelona.

Time Out wrote that during lockdown, Melbourne’s community spirit has never been stronger “and the neighbourhood that best embodies that is the westside suburb of Yarraville”.

Its rankings were based on responses from 38,000 people who answered their annual Time Out Index survey.

It was also informed by editors and experts who weighed up the candidates to choose each city’s coolest spot.
