Yarra Trams staff‘s latest bid to secure new deal

Negotiations have faltered between Yarra Trams and the union, with staff starting a fresh wave of industrial action. Here’s what they have planned.

Melbourne commuters face major delays

Yarra Trams staff will refuse to work overtime and wear uniforms under the latest wave of industrial action for Melbourne’s rail network.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union announced today they would introduce overtime bans from August 27 as they continue to negotiate with the tram operator.

Members will be unable to join in voluntary overtime or cover shifts on days off but it is not yet known if this will create delays and disruptions for commuters.

There will also be bans on wearing the company’s uniforms.

RTBU state secretary Luba Grigorovitch accused Yarra Trams of heavy-handed tactics to reach an agreement.

“These bans which are a first step in our industrial campaign will put pressure on Yarra Trams to manage rosters and other administrative tasks.

“Yarra Trams have ridden the wave of members’ good will for too long, now is high time for management to respect the hard work and dedication of their employees.”

METRO STRIKE ACTION CALLED OFF

The union claims the operator has tried to cut it out of negotiations by going straight to employees with a deal, with conditions for part-time workers a key sticking point.

It comes as negotiations continue between the union and Metro Trains, with a four hour strike still on the table for August 27.

Enterprise agreements have expired for all operational staff on V/Line, Metro and Yarra Trams and the RTBU is pushing for a 6 per cent payrise year on year.
