Yarra Council’s social media post about recycling attracts even more ridicule for embattled area

Yarra Council’s latest attempt to sell its controversial push for fortnightly recycling rubbish collections has failed, with locals pushing back against the move.

Bungling Yarra Council has failed again in trying to sell to residents its controversial push for fortnightly recycling rubbish collections.

A City of Yarra Facebook post offering tips on how to make space in the recycling bin only served to attract ridicule and angry comments from residents who simply want their overflowing bins emptied every week.

The Greens-dominated council says the change will reduce waste, but householders are having to put recyclable materials in with their general rubbish.

The latest Yarra advice and instructional video has been blasted online, especially the tip to scrunch foil into a ball.

“Honestly, who has that much aluminium to recycle?’’ one resident responded.

One of the council’s previous campaigns for fortnightly collections was to urge residents to get to know their neighbours in order to put excess rubbish in their bin.

The rubbish change occurred in December with mayor Gabrielle de Vietri saying it would take six weeks to change residents’ habits.

But fellow councillor Stephen Jolly said Yarra was blaming residents for not doing the right thing when it was the council that was actually cutting services.

The council opened a depot in Burnley where residents could drop off extra cardboard.

The latest Yarra instructions include reducing the amount of packaging that residents buy and flattening any cardboard boxes.

“Looking to maximise the space in your recycling bin? We’ve put together some tips to help you save up to 60 per cent of the space in your bin,’’ the Facebook post proclaims.

But most responses decried the council messaging as patronising and unhelpful.

“No amount of squashing can fit 2 weeks of most households recycling into the bin. Enough obfuscation Yarra City Council,’’ one resident said.

Yarra Residents Collective founder Adam Promnitz “the people’s republic of Yarra has shown itself to be completely out of touch with the ordinary person on the street’’.

“Its virtue-signalling agenda was internally focused rather than on residents,’’ he said.

“The council is not in tune with the day-to-day issues that face residents and small business that continue to struggle.

“They cry poor trying to implement taxes on sporting clubs but waste ratepayer money on their own personal political pet projects.”
