Workers turn screws on rowdy Southbank pedestrian bridge

A NOISY Southbank bridge appears to have been silenced with the addition of some extra screws.

Users of the Evan Walker bridge — which connects Southbank with Flinders St station — have been complaining about loudly banging planks since the City of Melbourne reopened the bridge in mid-June after spending $150,000 on resurfacing works.

It was even worse for patrons at the Ponyfish Island bar below, who compared the noise with a “herd of elephants”.

A decibel volume reader registered noise levels rising to 100dB at peak times — almost the same as a rock concert.

However, the problem now appears to have been fixed.

Work crews have this week added four lines of extra screws to the troublesome bridge to limit the “give” in the planks, lowering noise levels at the same time.
