Women in Victoria’s public sector earn $10,000 a year less than men

DESPITE the public sector employing twice as man women as men, a government report has found Victorian female public servants take home $10,000 a year less than their male colleagues.

WOMEN employed in Victoria’s public sector typically earn $10,000 a year less than men.

A new government report found that last June, female workers took home just $76,487 a year compared to $86,684 for men.

But the bloating public sector employs double the number of women than men.

The State of the Public Sector report found a 23 per cent blowout in the number of ­public service executives between June 2016 and 2017.

The report said it followed the axing of “longstanding controls” that capped executive numbers.

“The growth reflects demand for increased leadership capacity to support an expansion in programs, service delivery and new major projects,” it said.

Overall, the public service grew almost 10 per cent or almost 3700 bureaucrats last ­financial year.

This does not include frontline staff, such as nurses, public teachers and police.

The Community and Public Sector Union said growth in demand and staff attrition meant more workers were needed in corrections and child protection. It also said the gender gap was too large.

Minister for Industrial Relations and Women Natalie Hutchins said: “Every Victorian deserves a fair workplace and that’s why we’re determined to reduce the gender gap in workforce participation and pay.”
