Woman fatally hit by car on Peninsula Link

Peninsula Link has reopened following the tragic death of a woman after she was hit by a car on the freeway last night. It’s believed several motorists pulled over after colliding with debris on the road.

Police are investigating at the scene.

A female pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle last night after she had stopped on the side of a busy freeway in the Mornington Peninsula.

It is believed several cars stopped on the side of Mornington-Peninsula Link in Moorooduc about 9pm after colliding with debris on the road.

A campervan canopy had fallen onto the road, creating a dangerous obstacle for motorists.

Police believe the victim hit the canopy before pulling over on the side of the “poorly lit” stretch of road.

Road Policing Command Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said the woman was struck when two cars collided at the scene.

A total of four cars were involved in the deadly tragedy.

“At some stage a campervan has lost its roof unbeknownst to the driver (who was towing it),” he said.

“A car following it has hit the canopy and was forced to the side of the road with a flat tyre.”

Another two cars have pulled up behind the first car in the left-hand emergency lane.

The 64-year-old female victim was in one of the vehicles.

She left her car before being fatally struck in a collision involving a fourth oncoming vehicle.

“A fourth car has hit the last car in the line. They have gone into one another and unfortunately the woman was hit and died as a result of her injuries,” said Supt Fitzpatrick.

He said it was likely she was trying to “understand what had just occurred” in the moments being she was struck.

He urged drivers to take care on the roads, particularly when they are required to pull over.

“If you are in that situation, pull as far into the left hand side of the emergency lane as possible,” he said.

“If you need to get out, leave from the passenger side door and stand behind a barrier if it’s available.”

Supt Fitzpatrick also advised drivers to keep their seatbelt fastened if they stay inside their vehicle.

The woman died at the scene, and her family have been notified of her sudden death.

“The family are absolutely devastated to have lost a loved one,” said Supt Fitzpatrick.

Footage from the scene shows several cars stopped in the emergency lane.

One vehicle has significant damage to its rear.

The fatality shut down the road earlier this morning, but was later reopened.

Police are speaking with the driver of the other vehicle.

Three other people from other vehicles were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

They are a 43-year-old Elsternwick woman, a 45-year-old Rosebud man and 67-year-old Dromana woman.
