A woman has died in an explosive fire that destroyed the home she shared with her adult son in Melbourne’s west.

Fire Rescue Victoria was called to the Cameron Court property in Kurunjang at 3.16am, with 30 firefighters arriving to find the single-storey brick veneer home completely engulfed in flames.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, a next-door neighbour said her family was woken suddenly by two loud explosions about 3am.

Describing the blasts as “like an earthquake”, the neighbour said she and her husband grabbed their children before heading out the back door.

“Then we opened the door and see a big blast, big flames coming out of the back of their house,” she said.

“I immediately worried about the lady … I just knew in this fire she would not survive because I have never seen her walk straight like my other neighbours … I always assumed she could not walk.”

The neighbour said she then heard various people screaming as she made her way onto the street.

It was there she says the woman’s son sat helpless, crying out “my mum, my mum is in there”.

A second neighbour said the tragedy was “Just horrible”.

“You don’t give a stuff when a house goes down but when a person goes down with it, it’s just awful,” he said.

The blaze was extinguished by 4.20am, with firefighters confirming the fatality after searching the property for the woman.

While her adult son escaped from the home alive, his current condition is unknown.

A spokesperson for Victoria Police confirmed investigations are ongoing, but the cause of the fire “is not believed to be suspicious”.

The cause of the blaze remains undetermined.

The identity of the woman is yet to be confirmed, but neighbours say she was friendly and polite.
