And as winds eased into the night, Victorians were warned another wet and windy weather system is forming and will strike over the weekend. Earlier, Melbourne’s day of wild weather whipped through the day, with high waters even threatening flooding in the Southbank area, the Bureau of Meteorology says. Winds well over 100km/h were recorded in parts of Victoria as a strong cold front brought wild weather to the state. The weather bureau’s Kevin Parkin expected Melbourne to face the full brunt of the gusty winds by 5pm. “We’ve had some pretty intense winds across Victoria and Melbourne already and the cold front is knocking on Melbourne’s door,” he said. He said relief would come around midnight. Mr Parkin said a severe weather warning for all southern and mountain districts will likely remain in place into the evening. “The good news is hopefully by midnight conditions will be starting to moderate significantly.” But he said another weather system bringing strong winds and rains would return over the weekend, particularly on Mother’s Day. “We will be watching this particular weather system very closely as we could see some significant rainfall totals on Sunday and Monday,” he said. Ambulance Victoria operations manager Paul Holman said two men were in hospital after being struck by falling tree branches this morning.
