New Year’s Eve: Where to see Melbourne’s fireworks outside the CBD

DON’T fancy heading all the way into the city to catch some live fireworks? Try these spots closer to Melbourne’s suburbs to beat the CBD crowds.

PACKING up the family and trekking into the city on New Year’s Eve can be, let’s face it, unappealing.

But, as Melbourne City Council tells us, if you can see the city skyline, you can see the fireworks.

YOUR GUIDE TO MELBOURNE’S NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS

So here’s a few locations where you can catch city glimpses and, hopefully, a bit of this year’s display as well.

Quarry Park, Maribyrnong

Almost a two-for-one deal here: in neighbouring Footscray Park, Maribyrnong City Council will host its family-friendly fireworks, set for 9.30pm, with entertainment from 6.30pm.

A few road closures in place here, with Meyers Road and Cumberland Drive shut from 5.30pm until 11pm and Farnsworth Avenue, and Fisher Parade from 8.30pm until 11pm, but there's some free parking available around the area.

Albert Park, Albert Park

Still pretty close to the city itself, but you can catch decent views if you head lakeside.

Plus, you might get a headstart on the city exodus after the midnight fireworks finale.

The park is accessible at all times.

Ruckers Hill, Northcote

The higher ground inside Northcote’s All Nations Park can provide some good views for northerners.

Point Ormond, Elwood

Another popular spot for spectacular sunsets year-round, this site in Elwood should deliver the goods come New Year’s Eve.

Brighton Beach, Brighton

Another beachside location, Green Point and other sites along Beach Rd have some solid city views.

Williamstown

The east side of Williamstown, including Bay Trail stretching up from the cenotaph, offers some pretty stunning panoramas of the city across the bay.
