Drivers who run red lights are on notice, with 35 new traffic cameras being switched on as part of one of the biggest digital upgrades across Victoria’s road network.
The cameras, which will target speeding and red light runners, will be stationed in new locations across the state, and cover some of the intersections which are notorious for road crashes.
A new red-light and speed camera located at the intersection of Dandenong and Clayton Roads in Clayton will start over the weekend.
Other cameras have been installed in Geelong, Wheelers Hill, Warrnambool, Epping, Box Hill, Keilor Downs, Taralgon, Narre Warren, Brighton, Roxburgh, Bundoora, Coolaroo, Mulgrave and many more suburbs under the $49 million program.
Minister for Police Anthony Carbines said it was a huge step toward cracking down on drivers who put others at risk in Victoria’s roads.
“Road safety cameras have proven to be one of the most effective ways to get motorists to slow down and ultimately reduce serious injuries and save lives,” he said.
Research in Victoria has shown speeding is a significant factor in a large majority of road accidents, contributing to roughly one-third of all road trauma.
Recent statistics have shown male drivers continue to be the highest represented in the death toll, but sadly passengers, often women, are also increasingly among the statistics.
Research also indicates that even minor increases in vehicle speed dramatically increase the likelihood of crashes.
Notably, exceeding the speed limit by just 3 km/h escalates the risk of a crash by 25 per cent.
Drivers travelling at 65 km/h in a 60 km/h zone face double the risk of being involved in an accident.
The state government have previously been slammed for diverting more than $40m from Victoria’s road safety program to spend on the extra cameras, especially given the amount of revenue they generate.
In the 2023-24 financial year, fines issued from road safety cameras amounted to $473 million that’s expected to grow to over $1 billion over the next four years.
However, the state government has said that cameras are integral to the strategy of keeping Victorians safe on the roads.
All funds generated from road safety camera enforcement is also channelled into the Better Roads Victoria Trust, which is used to improve conditions on the network.
Road Safety Melissa Horne said drivers “have a responsibility of not just keeping themselves and others in their car safe, but everyone else using the road too. Every life lost on our roads is avoidable – I urge Victorians to do the right thing on the roads.”
TAC CEO Tracey Slatter welcomed the news saying “Road safety cameras, supported with public education, play a critical role in preventing illegal and dangerous driving on our roads.”
