A car has collided with a truck on the West Gate Freeway, causing the closure of three of four outbound lanes as VicRoads warns commuters delays are building quickly.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision but no one required treatment or was taken to hospital, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

A VicRoads official said it would take emergency services some time to clear the scene because the car had become wedged beneath the front of the truck.

Three outbound lanes have been closed between the Domain Tunnel and Montague St, with the remaining lane open at a speed limit of 40km/h.

The Department of Transport has issued new advice to drivers as delays extend more than an hour on the Monash Freeway and surrounding roads.

Drivers heading towards the city on the Monash should now look to exit the freeway at Burke Rd and use High St or Toorak Rd to travel towards the city, a department spokesman said.

“Olympic Boulevard, Alexandra Ave and City Rd are heavily congested into Southbank and should be avoided,” the spokesman said.

“Motorists using Montague Street to enter the West Gate Freeway will avoid freeway delays.

“The VicRoads signals team is monitoring conditions and will adjust traffic lights as needed to minimise congestion on surrounding roads.”

Motorists can access real-time traffic condition reports on the VicTraffic website and view public transport travel information on the PTV website or mobile app.
