West Gate Bridge crash: Traffic chaos after multiple vehicles involved in smash

Motorists heading into the city are facing major delays after a serious smash closed several lanes of the West Gate Bridge.

A major smash on the West Gate Bridge caused traffic mayhem on Wednesday morning as drivers faced long delays.

The crash involved multiple vehicles just before 10am on Wednesday.

Multiple lanes of the bridge were closed as emergency services responded.

Motorists were encouraged to use Geelong Road as an alternative to avoid the delays, which stretched back to the Princes Freeway in Laverton.

All citybound lanes on the West Gate Bridge reopened about 11am.

The Department of Transport issued a statement thanking motorists for their patience while crews worked to clear the incident.
