Beanies, scarves and extra layers made an appearance on Wednesday as Melburnians shivered through one of the coldest mornings so far recorded this winter season.
In the city, temperatures plummeted to a minimum of 1C at 6.40am, making the morning commute to work and school a lot chillier than usual.
Temperatures dropped to 0 degrees in Melbourne’s west and in some parts of the state, cars parked outside were covered in ice.
Meanwhile, minimum temperatures on the Mornington Peninsula reached a low of 1.3C, 1.4C in Geelong and -3.8C in Ballarat.
Residents in Avalon experienced their coldest morning since July 2017, experiencing minimum temperatures of -2C while Bendigo also reached a nine-year low of -3.9C.
“Parts of Greater Melbourne, Geelong and Mornington Peninsula all saw their lowest minimum temperature so far this year on Wednesday,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Christie Johnson told the Herald Sun.
“However it hasn’t been the coldest week this year, with the coldest week being the seven days between July 16 and 22.”
Ms Johnson added an extensive high pressure system is to blame for the chilly weather.
Earlier this week, a minimum temperature of 3.4C and maximum temperature of 12.7 degrees was recorded on Monday making it the coldest day this month so far for some parts of the state.
In other areas that day, temperatures dropped to 1.4C in Laverton, 1.7C at the Melbourne Airport, -0.3C in Warrnambool and 2 degrees in Bendigo.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the state, residents experienced their coldest mornings this year on Tuesday.
BOM forecaster Bri Macpherson told the Herald Sun on Monday, the last time Melbourne experienced such frosty weather was in August last year.
Despite the seemingly icy weather, the state has endured a warmer than usual winter.
“The average maximum and minimum temperatures for June and July were both very much above average,” Ms Macpherson said.
Snowgoers will be treated to a decent dusting in the coming days as a cold front sweeps over the state on Thursday and Friday, Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said.
“I’m expecting 10 to 20cm of snow … any precipitation will be falling as snow and the overnights they’re all well below freezing, so it’s good conditions for snow-making too,” he said.
“It’s exactly what the doctor ordered after a terrible middle of the ski season.”
As for the rest of the week, the Bureau is anticipating some sunny days before the state is hit with showers from Thursday in one last blast of winter.
