Jacinta Allan has penned a heartfelt letter of support to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where she said she is praying for peace for the people of Ukraine.
In the letter, obtained by the Herald Sun, the Premier also said she hoped to develop stronger ties between Ukraine and Victoria.
“On behalf of the people of Victoria, I want to express our heartfelt support - we stand with you and with the people of Ukraine,” she wrote.
“We all hope and pray for peace and for stronger ties between our people in the years ahead.”
Her letter was delivered to representatives of President Zelenskyy by Victorian Labor MP Michael Galea, who is the first state politician to visit the war-torn nation since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
Mr Galea, who travelled to the cities of Lviv and Kyiv and visited an apartment complex which had been bombed just days earlier, said it was a “privilege” to convey the Premier’s well wishes to the Ukrainian people.
“Russia is waging a campaign of terror on the Ukrainian people in the cruellest way possible,” he said.
“It’s not just a land grab by Russia. It’s an attempt to systematically destroy the Ukrainian people and their people. It is pure multifaceted evil.
“It’s more important than ever that the world is aware of the situation in Ukraine, and doing what we can to partner with it and support it.”
Ms Allan met with Ambassador of Ukraine, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, on March 18 earlier this year alongside Ukrainian World Congress president Paul Grad.
Also in the meeting was president of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria, Eugene Hawryszko.
Mr Hawryszko said Mr Galea’s trip would strengthen parliamentary ties with Ukraine and “aligns advocacy efforts of support to achieve a long-lasting peace”.
In her letter, Ms Allan told President Zelenskyy that she was proud that Australian exported Bushmaster vehicles, which are used in Ukraine, had been manufactured in her hometown of Bendigo.
“We are proud to play a small part,” she said.
