The Victorian Parliament’s baby boom has continued with Warrandyte MP Nicole Werner giving birth to her first child, Bobby.
It comes after Ms Werner opened up about her battle with hormonal condition Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
“I wanted to help normalise the conversation around fertility struggles and challenges, so that women and couples battling through them feel less alone,” she said.
“Since sharing our story, I have had countless women and couples reach out to me to share their stories – and to thank us for speaking out.
“For those going through your own fertility journey, whether it be PCOS, endometriosis, IVF, unexplained infertility, or anything else – please know that you are not alone.
“There are many walking in your shoes and many stories of hope on the other side of grief.”
For Ms Werner, and husband Fraser, that hope turned to joy on Wednesday with the arrival of their “miracle” Bobby.
Bobby is one of four babies born to sitting Victorian MPs since September, with another expected in coming months.
Next month a makeshift creche will be setup in the parliament for the first time in the building’s 168-year history.
Ms Werner said more could be done to make parliament a more attractive place for working mums.
“The fact that in a state like Victoria, which boasts of being progressive, that there have not been structures in place for women to bring their babies into Parliament is shameful,” she said.
“Parliament should not be a prohibitive workplace for working mothers – but a place that leads the way, as is our duty as leaders in the community.
“I welcome the changes taking places – and the steps we are taking to move forward.
“It says to every young woman who aspires to be both a mother and to one day serve in public office – that there is both the permission and the invitation for you to be both.”
