Want more online love matches? Here’s what people are looking for in your profile

Singles looking for love online are most successful when they use a few key phrases in their profiles — and they’re definitely not what you would expect.

In a sign of the times, young singles are having success on dating apps by saying they are working on their mental health and using the word “therapy”.
In a sign of the times, young singles are having success on dating apps by saying they are working on their mental health and using the word “therapy”.

Looking for love online? Say you’re working on your mental health and mention “therapy”.

Then state your star sign and reference your exercise and drinking habits.

In what is perhaps a disturbing sign of the times, online dating giant Tinder has revealed

about75 per cent of young singles say they find a match more attractive if they say they are open to working on their mental health and wellbeing, and are “emotionally stable”.

And so far this year, mentions of “therapy” in Australian Tinder bios are up 38 per cent on last year.

And if that’s not shocking enough, the often maligned Victorian city of Frankston has emerged — alongside Melbourne — as one of the country’s top Tinder talking territories.

The popular love matching app’s recent Future of Dating 2023 report also reveals:

Globally 18-25 year olds are 32 per cent less likely to ghost someone than 33+ year-olds.

Gen Z prefer to use terminology that doesn’t try to define a connection before they’re ready — hence terms like vibing, kickin it, deep liking, sneaky link and situationship are popular.

The top three things 18-25 year old singles are looking for right now are companionship, friendship or a situationship, with 64 per cent saying they like the emotional uplift that a love relationship brings.

Online dating is now the most common way singles are making new connections, with the majority of people under 30 using dating apps.

More than half (55 per cent) have been themselves — and 37 per cent know someone who has been — in a serious relationship with someone they met on Tinder.

Nearly 70 per cent of Gen Z believe that they are the ones to refresh dating standards for the future.

More than half of Millennials agree that dating is healthier for 18-25 year olds today than it was when they were the same age.

Meanwhile, over on other popular dating app Bumble, Melbourne users are most interested in your drinking habits, your star sign and how much you exercise.

They also want to know where you like to socialise, your favourite sports and favourite pets.

The top three questions used in Bumble’s conversation starter Questions Game by Melburnians are:

What’s the first thing you find attractive in someone?

What is something you are currently obsessed with?

Beach day or bush walk (which do you prefer)?
