Virtual lead-up event to 2021 Run for the Kids

Run for the Kids might be delayed until later in the year but Victorians can still lace up the runners and do their bit for the Good Friday Appeal. Here’s how.

Runner Jackie Ginefra is doubling down on Run for the Kids this year, with online and “on-the-road” races.

The Herald Sun and Transurban are giving Victorians the chance to take part in a virtual event in the lead-up to Good Friday, before the popular Melbourne run returns on August 29.

In celebration of the Good Friday Appeal’s 90th anniversary, entrants can raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital by logging in to walk, run or skip for 90 minutes any time between March 28 and April 2.

The “on-the-road” event will then see runners race around Docklands, across the Bolte Bridge and through the Domain Tunnel on August 29.

Ms Ginefra has raced every Run for the Kids, saying she loved the atmosphere and cause behind it.

“You’re running as part of a big group and it makes you want to keep going,” she said.

“The Royal Children’s Hospital is a worthy cause and I feel like I want to be part of that cause.”

Although a veteran racer now, Ms Ginefra had never been a runner until she got involved as a walker at the first Run for the Kids in 2006.

“Prior to the age of 35 I didn’t lace up my shoes at all,” she said.

Race director, Olympian Steve Moneghetti, said he typically wasn’t able to participate on race day, but the virtual event gave him the chance to tackle a 15km run around Ballarat.

“Twice the fun in 2021; what an ideal way to book end a five month fitness block and support the Royal Children’s Hospital,” he said.

Runners can register online from today with most of the fees going directly to the Good Friday Appeal.
