PASSENGERS at Melbourne Airport travelling with Virgin Australia have been urged to plan ahead as construction begins on a major renovation of the terminal.
The airline is upgrading check-in facilities at the front of the airport by replacing counters with modern self-serve kiosks and bag drop areas.
The improvements are due to be finished by the end of the year and will allow customers to board more quickly by using automatic check-in areas.

But Virgin Australia Airlines group executive Rob Sharp said it was important passengers planned ahead during the renovation.
“There will be some congestion created by construction and we’re going to staff up with extra people to combat that,” he said.
“Typically this work means it will be a bit harder for people to understand the flows when they arrive but we’ll have people giving directions so we’re not expecting delays.
“We also want people to know they can book online to save time and avoid any issues while work is under way.”
Mr Sharp said the airline had more than 100 return flights operating out of Melbourne every day.
“This is an instrumental project that will streamline and dramatically enhance the check-in experience for Virgin Australia’s guests flying from T3,” he said.
“It marks the commencement of the broader development plans we have with Virgin Australia for Terminal 3 and importantly, it integrates with the wider development works underway throughout the airport.
“We are forecasting a record-breaking Christmas and New Year period so it will be great
to have this new experience in place ahead of this.”
