Shocking footage has captured the moment an ugly brawl erupted at a local footy match at Altona North with fans appearing to bash an already injured player.
It is understood a disagreement sparked the skirmish at the Western Region Football League division two seniors match between Newport and Wyndhamvale about 3.30pm on Saturday.
Police were called to the incident at Langshore Reserve on Cresser St after receiving reports a group of people were involved in a physical altercation.
The vision shows Newport fans setting upon a Wyndhamvale player who had already been injured and was sitting on the sidelines.
He is seen being punched before then being chased around the perimeter of the field.
The footage shows a man being tackled to the ground before being mobbed by dozens of fans.
The nasty scene played out in front of a children’s playground with people perched on play equipment while watching.
In a statement police said that they spoke to several witnesses, but parties involved in the incident fled before officers arrived.
It is understood the Wyndhamvale player escaped without significant injuries, although he did suffer serious bruising.
On Sunday night he was yet to make an official complaint.
The Western Region Football League is reportedly conducting an investigation into the matter and has condemned the brawl, stating they have a zero tolerance approach to violence.
The Wyndhamvale Football declined to comment.
Police said that investigations were ongoing and anyone with information was asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
