Victoria’s top baby names for 2016 revealed

TRADITIONAL names are in vogue in Victoria, with some old favourites back among the most popular baby names for 2016. But our top picks have French and royal influences.

Traditional baby names made a resurgence in Victoria in 2016.

CHARLOTTE has become the top baby name for girls in Victoria and Oliver continues to reign in the list of popular choices for boys.

The royal baby girl name has sat at third place for the past two years but in 2016 jumped to the top above Olivia, which was the most popular choice for 2014 and 2015.

According to the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Olivia, Mia, Amelia and Ava all remained in the top five, while Evelyn broke into the top 20 to replace Sienna.

Jack, William. Noah and James were also among the top five for boys.

Oliver is a medieval name of French origin meaning olive tree.

The name Charlotte is the French feminine form of Charles and was famously picked by Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with the birth of their daughter in May 2015.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula revealed the top baby names this morning.

“Victorian parents have again shown an affinity with the name Oliver, while more traditional names such as Harry and Samuel made a resurgence in 2016.”

“Charlotte moved in to the top place for girls, no doubt inspired by the royal arrival of the daughter to the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge.”

“While names have changed significantly over the past fifty years, it seems there are some old favourites — including Jack, James, Emily and Chloe.”

Lucas, Charlie, Xavier and Liam remained in the top 20 for boys but had dropped down the list from last year.

Leo, Max and Mason had each climbed several places.

Unique girl names including Isla, Ivy and Harper had grown in popularity for the young ladies.
