Melburnians may like to dress in all black, but when it comes to their cars – it’s white all the way.

An analysis of Victorian new vehicle registration data has revealed that white is far and away the most popular choice for motorists.

The government data analysed over a five-year period showed that on the whole Victorians remain quite subdued when it comes to their car colours, with grey, silver and black rounding out the top four most popular choices.

However, that could be on the verge of changing — thanks to ‘the Barbie effect’ — as recent data from carsales.com.au showing that searches for pink vehicles on the online auto classified site vaulted 36.68 per cent last month.

The vehicle registration data also revealed what manufacturer is the most popular choice of Victorians.

Toyota is far and away the number one choice of vehicle for drivers, with new registrations of the Japanese car giant nearly doubling that of its nearest competitor, Mazda, between December 2018 to May 2022.

A total of nearly 145,000 Toyota’s were lodged in the Victorian vehicle registration database during the recorded period, with Mazda (78,000), and Ford (64,400) taking out the top three spots.

The data also revealed just how big a slump the car industry suffered during the beginning of the pandemic.

With the majority of Melburnians unable to leave their homes for many months on end, new registrations plummeted, hitting a low of just 8,496 new registrations in August 2020. The average amount of registrations during the period was just over 23,600 vehicles per month.

Other funny things found in the analysis of vehicle registrations were;

— If you see a Mauve car in Victoria, be sure to buy a lottery ticket. Mauve is by far the rarest choice in vehicle colour, with just three total being registered in the past five years.

— Much to Barbie’s dismay, Pink is still the third rarest colour of car you’ll see on our roads, however there was a random spike in new pink vehicle registrations in April 2019. Those 17 people in 2019 will be able to claim they are ahead of the trend.

— The race for ‘which Olympic medal colour do people want to drive in’ was silver by a country mile. Silver cars (108,000) far outstripped Bronze (2537) and Gold (1063) over the five-year period.
