Victorian residents could be set to get more households bins

Think bin night is already complicated enough? An overhaul of waste systems is set to increase the number of Victorians’ bins, as the state’s recycling crisis continues.

Ratepayers appear destined to receive an extra recycling bin after the premier refused to rule out the option, insisting Victorians “are equal to the challenge”.

In a move seemingly flagging an inevitable overhaul of kerbside waste systems, Premier Daniel Andrews said on Tuesday an increase in the number of bins was being considered.

The revelation came during a press conference when Mr Andrews flagged looming big plans to fix the state’s waste crisis.

“I don’t rule out an extra bin or bins because I know Victorians are equal to the challenge of separating their waste if they know and can be certain that is going to lead to jobs and the most productive end use for that waste, rather than it being buried or being burnt,” Mr Andrews said.

He also flagged the state was considering a range of uses for recycling material, including using crushed glass to build roads, and using plastic to build highway sound barriers and park furniture.

“On the broader issue there is a power of work going on at the moment, I have no announcements to make today, but we will have more to say quite soon about additional bins, about that circular economy,” he said.

“There are lots of different things we can do that create jobs and have an ultimate end use for our waste. If we do not do so then we will simply have to bury this waste, that’s not the way forward.”

The comments come after the Herald Sun revealed last month households soon could be putting out four bins on kerbside collection nights, under a secret state plan.

It would mean the three-bin model used in most councils — one for recycling, one for waste, and one for garden material — would be increased to four or more.

The latest news on the waste crisis comes as two more councils signed up to begin recycling again after Victoria’s waste crisis since embattled company SKM shut down.

Nillumbik and Hume councils have signed contracts to resume kerbside collection, bringing the total to seven councils now back on track out of the 33 that were thrown into crisis.

Meanwhile, multiple bids for the SKM assets were received on Monday last week by restructuring company KordaMentha ahead of settlement in October.
