Victorians won’t get an extra public holiday to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.
Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday ruled out any prospect of giving the community another day off when Charles is officially made King.
The coronation is set for Saturday, May 6.
The United Kingdom will get a bank holiday on Monday May 8, where residents will be invited to volunteer in their communities.
Western Australia will consider whether to mark the occasion with a public holiday, with Premier Mark McGowan describing the ceremony as an “historic occasion”.
But Mr Andrews said he wasn’t open to considering a day off in Victoria.
“We are not,” he said on Tuesday.
“Others may be. I’m not. We are not.
“We’ve got a suite of public holidays. They are all protected by law.”
Mr Andrews, who is an Essendon supporter, said he was instead looking forward to celebrating the AFL Grand Final.
“I’m really keen to go straight to the Grand Final Friday public holiday,” he said.
“We’ve had one round of footy. Essendon is on top. We can just go straight to finals, I reckon.”
