CityLink will close this weekend for the construction of a new road over the top of the Tullamarine Freeway at West Melbourne.
The road is part of a new elevated motorway above Footscray Rd and CityLink being built to feed traffic into the West Gate Tunnel.
The freeway will close in both directions between Footscray and Dynon Rds.
Motorists will have noticed two large structures hanging over the freeway in recent weeks.
From 10pm on Friday until 5am on Monday, the two parts will join up with 50m beams that each weigh 175 tonnes.
The new road will funnel southbound Tulla traffic on to the elevated roadway heading west to the tunnel.
Project managers will have one eye on the weather forecast, which is predicting rain — especially on Saturday — in the hope of completing the work in 61 hours.
The section of CityLink will be closed in both directions and motorists are urged to allow an extra 30 minutes for their journey.
Delays are likely on CityLink and nearby roads through the CBD, West Melbourne, Yarraville and Footscray.
The new structure is one of 16 new connecting ramps and bridges in the tunnel project and new link road network.
The construction of the elevated road over Footscray Rd has included the lifting of 39 beams into place over 900m either side of CityLink.
