Victorian IVF clinics’ success rates revealed

The latest data on IVF babies has been released, allowing woman considering IVF to compare the success rate of Victorian clinics. See how every clinic in the state rates.

IVF: What are your chances for success?

A regional IVF clinic is among the Victorian facilities with the highest rate of successful pregnancies in Victoria.

New annual data on the number of births following successful IVF treatments has been released, allowing patients to compare the rates of individual facilities.

The updated data was published this month on the Your IVF Success website, a federally funded initiative launched last year to improve transparency in the industry.

Monash IVF took out all three top spots when comparing births per complete egg retrieval cycle for a woman under 35 years of age, with their Geelong location leading the results.

The facility’s score of 53.8 per cent (which includes the later transfer of resulting embryos) was closely followed by two of the company’s other locations: Richmond (51.6 per cent) and Clayton (50.3 per cent).

Patients at Monash IVF Geelong who were under 35 years recorded the highest number of births per complete egg retrieval.

Melbourne IVF Mt Waverley— which recorded 49.4 per cent — ranked fourth.

For patients aged 35 to 42 years the percentages did drop, and the table also shifted with City Fertility in Bundoora recording the most success.

27.4 per cent of complete egg retrieval cycles (including the later transfer of resulting embryos) for this age bracket led to a baby.

Patients at Ballarat IVF had a similar success rate (26.8 per cent), followed by third-placed Melbourne IVF Mt Waverley where 26.1 per cent of patients gave birth following the procedure.

One of the biggest improvements compared to the data published last year was at Monash IVF Sale.

Their success rate for women under 35 more than doubled, rising from 17.9 per cent in last year’s report to 41.4 per cent in the most recent figures.

Monash IVF Bendigo’s rate for the same age group climbed from 41.3 per cent to 47.6 per cent while Monash IVF Geelong’s percentage went from 48.5 per cent to 53.8 per cent.

The Royal Women’s Hospital had the biggest increase for women over the age of 35, rising from 17.7 per cent to 22.2 per cent.

Melbourne IVF Mt Waverley’s numbers improved from 22.5 per cent to 26.1 per cent, while Ballarat IVF was the third most improved rising from 24 per cent to 26.8 per cent.

Professor Georgina Chambers said the UNSW National Perinatal Epidemiology and Statistics Unit, which developed the Your IVF Success website, was thrilled with its first year.

She told the Herald Sun almost 60,000 people visited the website and cited touching examples from users.

Professor Georgina Chambers says her team receives grateful emails from those they have helped on the fertility journey.

“We have received emails from people who have thanked us for the information we have provided that has helped them through their fertility journey over the past year and who have returned repeatedly to the site for further information and are now successfully pregnant,” she said.

“Those stories are so important to us and make the availability of this website, and the data we publish, so worthwhile.”

But she said it was important to consider the factors that were not captured by the data, such as the type of patients seen by different clinics.

“When reviewing a clinic’s success rates, it is very important to also take a look at their clinic profile information as some clinics may treat older or younger women, they may treat more women who have not previously had a baby or who may have specific fertility issues,” she said.

“All of these things can affect a clinic’s success rates and need to be taken into consideration if comparing different clinics.

“Every woman is an individual and her individual chances of success from IVF treatment are affected by many things.”
