Victorian Heart Hospital to get even more beds
Works have begun on the Victorian Heart Hospital in a bid to develop improved treatment for Australia’s biggest killer and the specialist centre is now set to take even more patients.

Victoria’s new heart has grown a little bigger.
With excavation now under way in preparation for construction, the Victorian Heart Hospital has grown to 206 beds — 11 more than originally planned.
Designs of Australia’s first specialist heart hospital have been welcomed as another step in developing improved treatment for Australia’s biggest killer by MonashHeart at Monash Health director Stephen Nicholls.
“The Victorian Heart Hospital is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape our approach to clinical care, research and teaching for heart disease,” Professor Nicholls said.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has provided an update on the $564 million Clayton development, which is expected to be completed in 2022. It will perform 2150 cardiac surgeries, up to 13,500 cardiac laboratory procedures and 108,000 consultations a year.
“This hospital will not only provide the very best cardiac care for patients with heart disease, but it will be home to groundbreaking medical research and will train the next generation of Victorian heart specialists,” Ms Mikakos said.
