Victorian Greens take aim at Pauline Hanson’s One Nation

MAJOR parties are being urged to put Pauline Hanson’s One Nation last in their preferences at Victoria’s state election next year.

In a bid to stem march of the minor party, Greens Party MP Nina Springle will introduce a motion today calling for One Nation to be placed at the bottom of voting tickets in 2018.

The Upper House move comes after Ms Hanson struck a divisive deal with the West Australian Liberals to be placed ahead of the Nationals at the WA state election.

Ms Springle said One Nation could not win a seat without preference deals from the major parties and urged major parties to block the minor party.

“Hanson won’t get a foothold in Victoria without Labor or Liberal preferences,” Nina Springle said

“She’s nasty, she’s divisive and we won’t stand by and let the old parties court preference deals like they have in WA and Qld.’’

The Greens have been subject to similar calls in previous elections, including 2010 when Victorian Liberal heavyweights put pressure on leader Ted Baillieu to rule out a deal with the Greens.

However Ms Springle said the motion was not “political self interest’’ but a move to protect the multicultural community.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy slammed the move.

“The Greens are the last people who should be lecturing the parliament about where preferences should or should not go according to purported racism.’’

“The left wing Greens have their own nasty, racist anti-Semitic elements.’’
