DOMAIN Road will be closed for five years, as works on the Metro Rail tunnel and Domain station begin.
The busy road will be closed between St Kilda Road and the western end of Edmund Herring Oval from today.
The work begins as Melbourne’s winter construction blitz wraps up in the CBD.
Over the past fortnight, St Kilda Road has been reduced to one lane in each direction as crews worked on a new tram route.
And while those works are finished, delays are expected to continue as crews work on the Swan Street Bridge, the CityLink Tulla widening project, the Monash Freeway upgrade and the Hustrbridge, Pakenham/Cranbourne lines.

After Metro Rail Tunnel works along St Kilda Road this week, Route 58 trams will travel along St Kilda Road and Toorak Road instead of Domain Road and Park Street.
Yarra Trams says new accessible platform stops will be built in St Kilda Road at Toorak Road, and in Toorak Road near Millswyn Street.
West Gate Freeway, Montague St exit change explained
Earlier this morning, VicRoads warned drivers travelling in alpine areas to keep an eye out for black ice on the road as temperatures dropped below zero.
Some furry critters also stopped traffic on the Hume Freeway in Campbellfield this morning, with kangaroos grazing dangerously close to the road.
The Mornington Peninsula Fwy (Peninsula Link) was also closed southbound at McCrae thanks to a collision but all lanes have since reopened.
Buses are replacing trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines between Cranbourne/Pakenham and Dandenong all day as works for the high capacity trains continue.
Metro warns this could add 50 minutes to your journey.
