Premier Daniel Andrews today confirmed the change circulated on 3AW’s rumour file, likely to see VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria merge, but would not give specific details until staff were briefed.

The government will create the super-sized department, which will combine VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and the Department of Transport

The 3000 plus staff at VicRoads and many hundreds at Public Transport Victoria will be folded into one mega-bureaucracy by July 1.

The State Government is not expecting any jobs to be lost.

Mr Andrews said the entire transport systems was integrated and it made sense the department that managed it was also integrated.

“It is important we have our own structures of government together reflecting the fact it is not a series of separate networks, it needs to work together as one network to get people where they want to go,” he said.

But he stressed there will be no job losses.

“We are effectively hiring,” he said.

Mr Andrews said there would be minimal cost to merging VicRoads and PTV, saying he expected the restructure to deliver savings as work would be completed more efficiently.

The changes were developed back in November when they established the Department of Transport as a stand alone entity.

Unions were yesterday brief on the restructure.
