V8 Supercar drivers have taken Melbourne’s newest roads for an exclusive test drive, bringing a Victorian minister on board as part of a new collaboration with the state government.
All buckled up, Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams joined racing superstars Cam Waters and Anton de Pasquale for a ride across the new Wurundjeri Way extension and elevated ramp — connecting CityLink to Footscray Road — ahead of the opening of the West Gate Tunnel Project later this year.
The new promo comes as revheads prepare to swarm the Albert Park circuit for the 2025 Formula 1 Grand Prix, with super fans given the chance to explore the new roads themselves.
An immersive 3D driving simulator will show racegoers through the expanded West Gate Freeway and new twin tunnels, previewing the new route connecting the city to the western suburbs.
For those who miss out, the virtual driving experience will pop up at shopping centres and festivals in Melbourne’s west later this year.
De Pasquale, Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro Driver, who grew up in Werribee, said he was “so excited to see how the West Gate Tunnel Project will change the way we move
around Melbourne, especially from the West”.
Waters, Tickford Ford Mustang driver, said the surface was “mega”.
“It’s a big project for Melbourne, so it was cool to check it out,” he said.
The West Gate Tunnel Project is expected to remove 9000 trucks from local roads and reduce congestion as an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
It comes as the Herald Sun revealed Aussie Formula One heroes Oscar Piastri and Jack Doohan would headline an Australian Grand Prix fan live site next week at Melbourne Park.
