Premier admits Victoria's bail laws still too soft

At least one of four teens accused of the stabbing attack of two men in an Bunnings car park in Melbourne’s north was on bail at the time of the alleged offending.

Craigieburn teen Hakopa Heremaia fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday where his lawyer revealed the 19-year-old was on bail at the time of the brutal alleged attack.

The incident flared after two men confronted a group of teenagers for allegedly stealing a set of AirPods.

The court heard Mr Heremaia sustained injuries to his hand during his arrest and needed to be seen by a custody doctor for concussion symptoms.

His lawyer said the teen would be vulnerable in custody due to his “age and appearance”.

Mr Heremaia sat quietly in the dock, making no comment throughout the brief hearing.

He was remanded to reappear in court on May 20.

Mr Heremaia was one of four teenagers arrested on Monday night following a fight between two groups which left three men with stab wounds.

Police say two men, aged 40 and 18 respectively, went to the carpark and confronted a group of teenagers after they allegedly stole a pair of AirPods from the 18-year-old during a robbery at a nearby shopping centre around 6:15pm.

The two men, from Glenroy, did not report the robbery to police and used the Apple ‘Find My’ app to track the allegedly stolen headphones.

Police responded to reports of a fight between two groups of men in the Bunnings car park on Pearcedale Parade about 7.30pm.

The Glenroy men were found with suspected stab wounds and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing four or five teenagers fleeing the scene.

An 18-year-old and three 19-year-old men were later arrested at a property on Fir Close in Broadmeadows.

A fifth teenager, also injured in the fight, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.

Mr Heremaia has been charged with cause serious injury with intention in circumstances of gross violence, affray and robbery.

The 18-year-old from Meadow Heights has been charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury and affray.

The two other accused offenders, 19-year-olds, from Coolaroo and Broadmeadows, were bailed on Monday to appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on June 17.

Co-accused Tyson Dwyer, 18, from Meadow Heights, has hired a lawyer to fight for his release from custody.

The teen, charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury and affray, will launch an application for bail in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard he’s never been in adult custody before and is also vulnerable due to his age and appearance.
