A man wished his neighbours a “merry Christmas” shortly before he was killed in Sale on Christmas Day.

The homicide squad on Wednesday night was investigating both his death and that of another man about 200m away in Dryden Pl.

The first man, aged in his 20s, was found dead at the top of his driveway on McLachlan St about 9.30am.

Neighbours who heard a loud noise later went to investigate and found his body.

It is believed a shotgun was found nearby.

The man is understood to have been due at a Christmas lunch with friends and was said to be in good spirits.

His death and that of a second man on Dryden Pl shocked residents, who told of hearing gun shots as they celebrated Christmas with loved ones.

Police were called to the Dryden Pl property where two homes were cordoned off.

A woman was seen sobbing in the street not long after.

It’s understood the two men knew each other.

A woman who lives nearby told the Herald Sun her family heard what sounded like a gun shot.

“We thought it sounded like that (a shot) or like loud fireworks,” she said.

Another neighbour also said she heard a very loud noise that started her dog barking. The speed of the events shocked the “normally quiet neighbourhood”.

Robyn Hirst was on her balcony on Dryden Pl when she saw police had blocked off the street.

“Just before then there hadn’t been a thing, we didn’t hear anything and then there were cops everywhere,” she said.
