A massive 1100-tonne tunnel boring machine has broken through at the site of the future Parkville Station in another milestone for the Metro Tunnel project.
New footage shows the moment Joan – named in honour of Victoria’s first female Premier Joan Kirner – dug through to the station box 20 metres below Grattan Street on Thursday morning.
It follows the completion of two 1.2 kilometre rail tunnels between Arden and the western tunnel entrance in Kensington earlier this year.
Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the “vital project” was continuing under lockdown restrictions with strict health procedures.
“It’s fantastic to see Joan arrive at the future Parkville station.”
“The Metro Tunnel is working through the pandemic supporting thousands of jobs, while creating the new space to run more trains more often.”
There are four tunnel boring machines making their way under Melbourne as part of the project.
Another one will arrive in Parkville over coming months while two others are tracking towards South Yarra after being launched at Domain.
The machine is set to be moved through the Parkville station box and relaunched towards the new State Library Station site in about a month.
While the station at Parkville is beginning to take shape, work on the permanent structure is also being continued.
