A truck has burst into flames and spilt fuel across the Monash Freeway at Chadstone, sparking commuter chaos.
All city-bound lanes have now reopened between Huntingdale and Warrigal roads after the incident caused peak-hour pain and delays of up to an hour.
Congestion is easing but traffic is still banked back to EastLink, with motorists warned to seek an alternative route and expect journeys to take an extra 30 minutes.
“We suggest motorists exit the Monash Freeway prior to Wellington Road to avoid the worst of the delays,” the Department of Transport and Planning said in a statement.
“The Princes Highway, Wellington Road, Ferntree Gully Road, Waverley Road or the Burwood Highway provide good alternatvies. Drivers can return to the freeway from Warrigal Road.”
Witnesses reported black smoke billowing from the truck.
