How do you welcome an American fast-food outlet to Melbourne? A tram drive-thru, of course. Taco Bell is celebrating its first Victorian store in a truly Melbourne fashion – here’s how you can climb aboard the taco tram.

Heading down Chapel St tomorrow? You might just be in for a tasty treat.

To celebrate the opening of their very first Melbourne restaurant, American fast-food favourite Taco Bell is throwing a Mexican fiesta and all of Chapel St is invited.

Between 12 and 3pm, every tram that stops outside Taco Bell’s new Chapel St restaurant will be treated to free Mexican food, delivered right onto the tram carriage.

The menu includes a Crunchwrap Supreme, Tortilla chips with nacho cheese sauce, and Churros with chocolate dipping sauce.

All hungry travellers need to do is board any Balaclava-bound tram at stop 51 (Malcolm St), put in their order, and enjoy the tram trip down to stop 47, where Taco Bell staff will climb aboard and deliver delicious Mexican food straight to your seat.

Taco Bell spokeswoman Tamika Nelson says that the ‘tram-thru’ is the perfect way to introduce Melburnians to Taco Bell.

“We are extremely excited to introduce Taco Bell to the food capital of the nation, in what will be a quintessential Melbourne launch,” she said.

While other Australian Taco Bell stores feature the fast-food staple of a drive-thru, Chapel St’s closely-nestled shopfronts don’t afford such luxuries.

Chapel St’s beloved – if sometimes clunky – route 78 tram does however run right past the new Taco Bell’s doorstep, presenting a uniquely Melbourne opportunity.

Taco Bell South Yarra officially opens its doors at 352 Chapel St, South Yarra, on Saturday at 10am.
