A V/Line train carrying passengers ploughed into a car left abandoned on the tracks in Deer Park on Saturday night.

The V/Line Ballarat service heading inbound into Southern Cross station hit a black sedan about 11.30pm near the Robinsons Rd crossing between Deer Park and Caroline Springs stations. No one was injured in the crash.

Witnesses said they believe the driver was speeding before hitting a fence and becoming stuck. They tried to get the car off the tracks but then heard the train coming, panicked and made a quick dash to escape.

It took emergency services three hours to clear the wreckage, causing major delays.

Transit police have confirmed their investigations remain ongoing as they search for the owner of the vehicle.
