The head of Victoria’s police union has roasted the latest vandalism attack on a Melbourne building by pro-Palestine activists, saying they only forget the cliché “Romans go home”.
Police Association of Victoria Wayne Gatt blasted the attack on the Trades Hall in Carlton in which messages including “cops out of Trades Hall”, “cops defend genocide”, “free Palestine” and “class traitors” were painted on the building.
“It appears these vandals have delved into their grab bag of clichéd anarchist catch phrases and yelled them on to a wall,” Mr Gatt said.
“Bravo. They left out ‘Romans go home’.”
Trades Hall on Victoria St was hit by graffiti vandals about 3.30am on Thursday.
Thursday morning’s vandalism comes a day after federal Labor MP Josh Burns’ office was plastered with red paint and set alight.
Five offenders were caught on CCTV lighting two telecommunications pits on fire, smashing the building’s windows and spraying red paint throughout.
The words “Zionism is Fascism” was branded over the MP’s photo on the window in a major escalation of violence directed at Labor politicians.
Mr Burns, who is Jewish, delivered an emotional press conference in the aftermath where he pleaded with those responsible to end the violence and hate.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese swiftly condemned the attack and called for those responsible to face the full wrath of the law.
Premier Jacinta Allan echoed those thoughts and slammed the actions of the offenders.
Several other buildings across town, including MPs’ offices and TV network headquarters, have been subject to similar attacks in recent months.
