A prominent real estate agent who was allegedly stabbed by former horse trainer Tommy Hughes Jnr says he faces a “long recovery” after the frightening attack.

Rendina senior sales executive Simon Gray was allegedly stabbed by Mr Hughes, 56, in Ascot Vale on August 8.

The Herald Sun understands Mr Hughes was evicted from a property managed by the real estate company in July.

He had recently moved in to the Ascot Vale home of Jennifer King after his displacement, renting a bedroom from her.

Police also allege Mr Hughes stabbed Ms King on the same day.

“It was obviously a shock,” Mr Gray told the Herald Sun.

“It is not a good thing to have happened, I wish it never happened.

“I am very lucky it wasn’t any worse.”

Mr Hughes and Mr Gray had known each other professionally for some time and had spoken a number of times before the alleged ambush, it is understood.

Police allege Mr Hughes threatened to kill Mr Gray, before imprisoning him and detaining him against his will.

Hughes is also accused of assaulting Mr Gray and Ms King with a kitchen knife.

Last week, the force successfully applied to the court for personal safety orders to be granted to protect the man and woman Hughes had allegedly attacked.

Under the order, Mr Hughes is banned from going within 10m of the pair.

Mr Gray has been discharged from hospital and says he is focusing on his recovery at home.

“I’m not worrying about him, it will go before the courts,” he said.

“I’m working on myself. I have a long way to go. It will take some time to recover from, physically and mentally. Hopefully I can move on.”

Mr Hughes was arrested after crashing his car into a tree while allegedly trying to evade police on Kensington Rd, Kensington, at 2pm last Wednesday.

Mr Hughes’ lawyer, Anthony Brand, told the Melbourne Magistrates’ court his client had sustained broken ribs in the serious car accident and was suffering mental health issues.

“Mr Hughes has some significant health issues, which need, I would say, fairly immediate attention,” Mr Brand said.

“I would be asking he receive some fairly comprehensive attention for those matters.”

Investigators have also charged Hughes with dangerous driving and failing to stop his vehicle at the direction of police on August 9.
