A timber truck has crashed into a white van on the M80 Ring Road before bursting into flames on Thursday morning, killing the van’s only passenger.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the two vehicles collided about 11.20am.
“Sadly, the sole occupant of the van, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene,” she said.
“The driver of the truck escaped from his cabin and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
The truck fire has been extinguished, with black smoke initially billowing from the crash scene.
Sheets of cardboard and timber were strewn across the freeway after the dramatic smash.

Motorists were advised to plan ahead for the afternoon peak and to avoid the Greensborough-bound lanes of the M80 Ring Road.
The M80 Ring Road is closed between Keilor Park Drive and the Calder Freeway, and there are significant delays back to Furlong Road.
A Department of Transport spokesperson said motorists were exiting at Keilor Park Drive and detouring to re-enter the M80 from the Calder Freeway or from Airport Drive.
Alternatives include Ballarat, Station, Kings, Taylors and Green Gully roads to reach the Calder Freeway, or using the West Gate Freeway and Citylink/Tullamarine Freeway.
The spokesperson said the closure was under the control of emergency services, with the freeway to reopen when investigations are complete.
VicRoads signal engineers are monitoring conditions on surrounding roads and are adjusting traffic lights to help minimise delays.
The circumstances of the collision are under investigation.
