Three men, including sons of Melbourne barrister, to fight post-football assault charges

Three men including two sons of a Melbourne barrister intend to fight charges they were involved in an alleged attack on two men after last year’s Richmond-Hawthorn qualifying final.

Two brothers, the sons of a prominent Melbourne barrister, and a third man will fight charges over an alleged savage assault outside the MCG during footy finals.

Dominic and Sam Walker, sons of Tim Walker QC, are charged with a brutal attack on two men, aged 61 and 45, after last year’s Richmond-Hawthorn qualifying final.

Along with their mate Benjamin Fitt they are facing charges of intentionally and recklessly causing injury, conduct endangering life, cause serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

At the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today lawyers for the trio were granted leave to cross-examine witnesses to the alleged assault.

It is understood they include the complainants, two doctors, police and a taxi driver will be cross-examined at a hearing in July.

The men are facing a maximum penalty of up to 15 years in jail.

CCTV capturing the alleged assault, including showing one man being repeatedly punched and having his head stomped on, is expected to be key prosecution evidence.

At the time his sons were charged, Tim Walker released a statement asking the media to respect his family’s right to privacy.

“This matter is still under police investigation. We are not able to comment at this stage,” he said.

“We have every confidence Victoria Police will obtain all relevant evidence, including all available CCTV footage.”
