THREE men have been injured while using illegal fireworks to ring in the new year, after police issued a warning about using explosives.

THREE men have been injured in separate illegal New Year’s Eve fireworks explosions overnight.

Ambulance Victoria state health commander Paul Holman said the “stupid behaviour” put the men in hospital.

Emergency services were called to a property Stoneman Turn, Caroline Springs, just after 10.30pm with reports of a fireworks incident.

The man, 34, was seriously injured after a firework exploded in his hand.

He was taken to hospital with serious hand injuries.

The second incident happened in Melton just before 12.30am.

A man, aged in his 30s, was burnt after a firework exploded in his face.

He was flown to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The third explosion also happened just after midnight in St Leonards following reports a man sustained hand injuries after lighting an illegal firework.

Emergency crews were called to Clyde Avenue, St Leonards.

The 42-year-old Brunswick West man suffered a hand injury after lighting an illegal firework.

He returned home but went to hospital for treatment.

“Stupid, dangerous behaviour and that is before it even gets to setting any fires. We are starting into the fire season and it’s the last thing we want to see,” Mr Holman told 3AW.

Police are investigating and urge anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It comes after police issued a warning about illegal fireworks after almost three tonnes were seized from five homes in Melbourne’s southeast late last month.
