Incoming Goldstein MP Tim Wilson is spearheading a crusade to stop Labor’s tax grab on unrealised capital gains, starting with a recruitment drive for a campaign manager to rally against the contentious proposal.
Under Labor’s plan, the concessional tax rate on superannuation earnings would double to 30 per cent for balances over $3m from July 1.
This would include taxing unrealised gains on assets in self-managed funds such as businesses, shares and property.
Mr Wilson, who began advertising for the role on Thursday, claims the tax would deter superannuation funds from investing in growth sectors, with small businesses, technology and finance start-ups hit hard.
The job ad states that Mr Wilson previously ran a successful campaign against Labor’s proposed retirees tax, and was “hell bent” on stopping this measure.
“This tax will destroy aspiration in Australia. It must be stopped. Failure is not an option,” the ad states.
“What we are looking in a successful candidate … (is) preparedness to make history.”
The campaign manager would be expected to spend time in marginal seats nationwide. The salary for the short-term contract would be “commensurate with experience” with “bonus paid on success”.
The ad states they would not be employed by the commonwealth, with Mr Wilson setting up a fund to finance the role and campaign.
Mr Wilson said: “We are raising money from across the community to ensure that we stop this family savings tax so we can keep aspiration alive.
“The only way to break this tax is to break this government and that is what I intend to do.”
