IT was a 90-second video clip that led to 2.8 million British women getting active.
Now the “This Girl Can” campaign is coming to Australia.
The advertisement, developed by Sport England, aimed to help women overcome their hesitation about exercise by showing women sweating, and huffing and puffing in all their glory.
A casting call is being held by VicHealth for women to star in a Victorian version of the ad, marking the first time it will screen outside the UK.
VicHealth chief Jerril Rechter said research showed more than 40 per cent of Victorian women felt too embarrassed to exercise in public, so it was important to show women getting active regardless of their fitness, ability or how they looked.
“What we love about the campaign is that is shows normal-looking women getting active and having fun,” she said.
“It absolutely helps women overcome those feelings of judgment when exercising, and that’s the main barrier for women participating in physical activity we want to address.
“We know the incredible role modelling that occurs in communities and families when women are out getting active.”
